• Live webinars and interactive community sessions
• Mentorship from current JETs and alumni
• Cultural preparation beyond logistics

It’s your starting point — before applications, before departure, before life in Japan begins.

Mentorship & Community

One of the most common things JET hopefuls say is:

“I just want to know I’m not doing this alone.”

JETPrep Essentials connects you with:

  • Current JETs

  • JET alumni

  • Other applicants navigating the same process

This is a space to ask questions, talk things through, and learn from people who have already walked the path — and who are walking it with you.

Alumni Wisdom: What They Wish They’d Known

You’ll hear real stories and honest insights from JET alumni about:

  • Adapting to life abroad

  • Building community

  • Learning the language

  • Making the most of the experience

More alumni voices and mentor clips will be added throughout the cohort season

Dana B, JET Alum, CIR

“Just go for it. For me, it was an immensely valuable way to change my life, gain perspective, and be part of a new community abroad."
What past JET participants say

Michael L, JET Alum, ALT

"The worst thing you can do is hole up in your apartment. What’s the point of coming all this way if you’re not experiencing the local area and meeting people?"

Steven M, JET Alum, ALT

“The number one thing you can do is learn the language. Even if you don’t fully understand the culture, if you can communicate, you’ll learn fast — and your experience will be so much better.”

Optional Travel Experiences

For those who want deeper immersion, JETPrep also offers optional travel experiences in Japan.

These may include:

  • Cultural discovery and homestays

  • Language immersion and daily practice

  • Education immersion with classroom observations and JET connections

Travel programs are offered separately and shared as they open.

All participants may choose to travel with us once they feel ready — turning preparation into real-world experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be applying to the JET Program this year?

Not at all. JETPrep Essentials is designed for people across the JET journey — whether you’ve already interviewed and are waiting to hear back, have been accepted and are preparing for departure, plan to apply in a future cycle, or are still exploring if JET is the right path for you.

Many participants join to stay supported, connected, and confident during the months of waiting, preparing, and planning what comes next.

How much time does the program take each month?
JETPrep Essentials is designed to fit real life. The core modules are self-paced, so you can move through them at your own speed. Most participants spend around 2–4 hours per month engaging with content, attending optional live sessions, or participating in the community. You can join what’s helpful and skip what isn’t — there’s no pressure to complete everything at once.

Is this only for future Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs)?
JETPrep is created for anyone interested in the JET Program, including both ALT and CIR hopefuls. The skills we focus on — intercultural communication, collaboration, teaching readiness, and adapting to life in Japan — are valuable across JET roles and throughout the entire journey.

When does the program officially begin?
Enrollment opens in February, with core modules releasing shortly after. Live sessions and community events continue throughout the year, and you can join at any point once enrollment opens. Interest list members receive early access and updates as we get closer to launch.

Is this the same as the Interview Accelerator?
No. The Interview Accelerator is a short, intensive program focused specifically on interviews.
JETPrep Essentials is a longer-term preparation program focused on life, work, and personal growth before Japan.
