❓ Program Basics

Find out who can participate, how our programs work, and what you can expect on your leadership journey.

What makes Positive Global Learning different from other global education programs?

Positive Global Learning takes a whole-person approach that goes beyond travel logistics. Our unique “warm-up, workout, and cool-down” model supports participants before, during, and after their journey — helping them prepare with purpose, engage deeply while abroad, and carry their growth forward into future opportunities. Unlike many programs that focus only on the trip itself, we emphasize reflection, community-building, soft skills, and cultural connection. Every participant is part of a supportive cohort and alumni network designed to help them grow as global leaders for life.

What programs do you offer?

We’re continually building new experiences across ages and interests. Visit our Programs page to see what’s open now, and join our newsletter to stay updated on future offerings.

Are travel programs currently available?

Yes! JetPrep Travel Programs in Japan are currently running seasonally (Cultural Discovery, Language Immersion, Education Immersion). Future destinations, like Taiwan, are under exploration — see our Programs page and newsletter for updates.

Who can apply for a Positive Global Learning program?

Positive Global Learning is open to emerging adults, educators, families, and global partners. Each program has its own eligibility guidelines. Our Prep Programs, for example, are designed for adults (18+) and educators. Explore each page to find the best fit for you.

How long are the programs?
Program lengths vary depending on the experience:

  • Exchange Programs: Typically 7–30 days overseas.

  • Virtual Certificates: 4–8 weeks or multi-month pathways.

Can I participate in more than one program?

Absolutely! Many participants join multiple programs across different formats or years. For example, you might start with a virtual certificate, then join an in-person cultural exchange or educator retreat. Our programs are designed to build on one another and grow with you.

How big are groups and who leads them?
Most travel programs run with 10–14 participants (immersion programs may run with 5–10). Groups are led by trained PGL facilitators with local partners; a staff member is on call 24/7 for support.

What’s the minimum enrollment for programs?

Most travel programs require a minimum of 10 participants to run. Immersion-style programs are designed for smaller groups and may run with 5–10 participants. These minimums ensure both affordability and a close-knit learning experience.

Are your programs accessible to participants with disabilities or specific needs?

We are committed to inclusion and do our best to support diverse access needs. If you have a disability, health condition, or specific accommodation request, please reach out early so we can work together to create a supportive experience.

Do you accept international participants?

Yes! While many of our programs are designed for U.S.-based participants, we welcome applications from around the world unless a specific geographic region is required by a funding partner. Please reach out if you're unsure whether you're eligible — we'd love to hear from you.

❓ Prep Programs

Explore JetPrep, GlobalWorks Prep, and TravelPrep—who can join, how cohorts mix, track options, Aomori teaching immersion, and academic credit.

Do I need to complete a virtual Prep program before traveling?
Priority is given to participants who complete a virtual Prep program (e.g., JetPrep Essentials). When space allows, a small number of guest seats may be opened to the general public. Guest participants will receive a short orientation so they feel prepared before traveling.

Will I travel with the same people from my virtual cohort?
Not necessarily. Groups may mix across different cohorts and seasons based on dates and interests. All trips still emphasize small-group connection, guided reflection, and community norms.

Can non-Prep participants join?

Yes, as space allows. Guest participants complete a short pre-departure orientation and join the JetPrep community on-trip. Priority remains with JetPrep/Prep graduates.

How do the three JetPrep Travel tracks differ?

  • Cultural Discovery – entry-level immersion through festivals, temples, workshops, and homestays. Perfect for anyone curious about Japan and eager to experience cultural highlights in a supportive group setting.

  • Language Immersion – build conversational Japanese skills (including keigo basics) through daily practice, cultural activities, and real-world interaction with local speakers.

  • Education Immersion – hands-on experience in Aomori classrooms, including shadowing Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs), lesson planning, coaching, and opportunities to practice teaching.

Where are Language and Education Immersion programs based?

Both the Language Immersion and Education Immersion tracks are based in Aomori, offered in Spring, Summer, and Fall.
-
Language Immersion includes cultural activities, conversational practice, and guided reflection to build confidence using Japanese in everyday life.
-
Education Immersion focuses on classroom observations, ALT shadowing, debriefs, and opportunities for lesson planning and practice teaching.

Can I join more than one track or season?
Yes. Each track stands alone, and many participants return in another season or track (e.g., Cultural → Language → Education) to deepen skills.

Do I need to speak Japanese to join?

No prior Japanese is required. The Language Immersion track adapts to your skill level — whether you’re starting with conversational basics or building toward fluency. Participants practice through daily interactions, peer learning with their cohort, and opportunities to engage with Japanese university students. Other tracks also include cultural context and support, so you’ll feel prepared no matter your starting point.

How does academic credit work?
Participants may qualify for three (3) graduate-level cultural study credits through our higher-education partner, Academic Freedom. To be eligible, you must opt in before the program begins so hours, reflections, and assignments can be tracked. Credit requires a minimum of 45 documented hours and cannot be awarded retroactively. Estimated tuition (2026): $455–$475.

What counts toward the 45 documented hours?

Academic credit is earned through structured activities aligned to a course syllabus. Eligible components may include:

  • Pre-departure modules and orientation

  • Live seminars, mentorship circles, and office hours

  • In-country guided activities (e.g., cultural visits, school observations), with reflection/journaling

  • Peer discussions/story circles

  • Post-program reflection wrap-up and a short portfolio/capstone

Documentation may include attendance verification, reflection submissions, brief assignments, and the final portfolio. Independent, non-syllabus activities do not qualify. Credit requires a minimum of 45 documented hours and cannot be awarded retroactively.

Where can I find dates, pricing, and what’s included?
See each program page and the seasonal flyers for specifics (destinations, inclusions, lodging, and pricing).
