Why This Journey?
You’ve already done something extraordinary.
You lived abroad. You stepped outside what was familiar, built a life in another culture, formed relationships across borders, and discovered parts of yourself you may not have known were there.
But coming home doesn’t mean that part of your story has to end.
JETBeyond: Across East Asia is an invitation to travel again—with the curiosity that first took you abroad, but with a little more intention about where you’re going next.
Over three weeks, we’ll journey through Taiwan, Okinawa, and South Korea, experiencing each place at a different rhythm. We’ll connect with people and possibilities in Taiwan, slow down and restore in Okinawa, and explore culture, history, wellbeing, and contemporary life across South Korea.
Along the way, there will be meaningful experiences and shared adventures—but also space. Space for conversations that unfold naturally. Space to wander. Space to rest. Space to reconnect with old passions or discover new ones. And space to think about what you want the next chapter of your life to look like.
Because this isn’t about collecting destinations.
It’s about remembering what travel can awaken in you—and carrying that forward.

JETBeyond is a three-week international learning and reflection experience designed for JET alumni ready to reconnect with curiosity, community, and what comes next.
Beginning in Taiwan, slowing down in Okinawa, and continuing through South Korea, this journey blends cultural immersion, meaningful connection, personal reflection, and space to explore—not as tourists rushing from place to place, but as a small community traveling with intention.
Week One | Taiwan
Connection, creativity, and looking forward
Our journey begins in Taiwan, where participants settle into a shared home base and begin building community.
Through cultural experiences, local connections, reflection, and guided programming, we’ll explore what it means to carry our international experiences forward—and make space for bigger questions about what we want to create, pursue, or carry into the years ahead.
Taiwan is our place to arrive, connect, and imagine possibilities.
Possible experiences may include: Taipei exploration, neighborhood and food experiences, local partners and community connections, reflective workshops, independent exploration, and a coastal or nature excursion.

Week Two | Okinawa, Japan
Restoration, island culture, and room to breathe
After an active first week, Okinawa offers something intentionally different: space.
Based in Naha, participants will have their own hotel rooms and plenty of freedom to slow down, recharge, and reconnect with Japan from a completely different perspective.
We’ll explore Ryukyuan culture, spend time along the coast, and venture beyond Naha together—but we’ll also protect unstructured time for the beach, cafés, wandering, sleeping in, journaling, or simply doing nothing at all.
This part of the journey is not about fitting in more.
It is about noticing what happens when we finally make room for less.
Possible experiences may include: Naha and Kokusai-dori, Makishi Public Market, Ryukyuan cultural experiences, a Kerama Islands beach day, an excursion toward Onna or northern Okinawa, and intentionally unscheduled restoration time.
Week Three | South Korea
Wellbeing, history, transition, and what comes next
Our final chapter moves through three very different Korean settings.
Busan
Coast, community, and contemporary Korea
We’ll begin along Korea’s southern coast with time to explore Busan’s neighborhoods, beaches, food, and wellness culture while reconnecting as a group after Okinawa’s more independent rhythm.
This is a place for exploration without rushing—and a chance to experience another dynamic side of East Asia.
Yuseong + Gongju
Wellbeing and connections across cultures
From Busan, we travel north to Yuseong, known for its long hot-spring tradition.
This slower interlude will combine rest and reflection with a day in nearby Gongju, one of the former capitals of the Baekje Kingdom.
Gongju is especially meaningful within this journey because the Baekje Historic Areas preserve evidence of cultural and artistic exchange among ancient Korea, China, and Japan—making it a fascinating place to consider how ideas, traditions, and people have moved across East Asia for centuries.
Seoul
Tradition, independence, and the journey home
We’ll finish in Seoul with a deliberately layered experience: beginning together in a traditional shared hanok setting before transitioning into contemporary Hongdae and individual hotel rooms for our final night.

✈️ Your travel to Taiwan and home from South Korea
You’ll arrange your own travel to Taiwan at the beginning of the journey and home from South Korea at the end.
🍜 Most meals
Keeping many meals independent gives you the freedom to explore local food on your own terms—from neighborhood favorites to spontaneous discoveries.
🚇 Personal transportation + independent activities
Transportation and activities you choose during independent time are generally your own responsibility.
🛡️ Travel insurance
Travel insurance, including emergency medical coverage, will be required.

❓ Questions You May Have
Do I need to be a former JET Programme participant?
JETBeyond: Across East Asia is designed primarily for JET Programme alumni. The shared experience of having lived and worked in Japan is an important part of the community we’re creating.
If you weren’t a JET but feel strongly connected to the purpose of the journey, reach out—we’re always happy to have a conversation about whether the experience might be a good fit.
Do I need to know anyone before I join?
Not at all! In fact, you may arrive knowing no one.
JETBeyond is intentionally designed around a small cohort, with opportunities to connect before departure and throughout the journey. By the time the journey begins in Taiwan, you’ll already have begun getting to know the people you’ll be traveling with.
What are the program dates?
January 17 – February 5, 2027
JETBeyond: Across East Asia is a three-week small-group journey through Taiwan, Okinawa, and South Korea.
Participants are welcome to arrive in Taiwan early or extend their travels in South Korea after the program.
What is included in the $5,987 program fee?
Your program fee includes accommodations throughout the journey, flights from Taiwan to Okinawa and Okinawa to South Korea, major transportation between program destinations, curated cultural experiences and local connections, JETBeyond programming and reflection, and on-the-ground PGL support.
You’ll arrange your international flight to Taiwan and your flight home from South Korea independently.
What about meals?
Some meals will be included as part of scheduled experiences, while many will remain independent.
That’s intentional! Food is one of the joys of travel, and we want you to have the freedom to follow recommendations, revisit a favorite place, grab something inexpensive, or splurge on something special.
What will the accommodations be like?
Accommodations are part of the experience and will vary by destination.
You can expect a thoughtfully selected combination of shared accommodations and private hotel rooms, giving us opportunities to build community while also creating space for privacy and restoration throughout the journey.
Specific accommodations will be shared with participants as reservations are finalized.
Will I have free time?
Absolutely.
JETBeyond is not designed around filling every available hour.
Alongside our shared experiences, you'll have intentional time to explore independently, visit somewhere that interests you, meet a friend, find a café, spend time at the beach—or simply rest.
How physically demanding is the journey?
Participants should be comfortable with the realities of international travel, including walking, stairs, public transportation, carrying or moving luggage, and travel days between destinations.
Whenever possible, we'll balance active days with slower experiences and opportunities to rest.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Participants will be required to carry travel insurance that includes appropriate emergency medical coverage for the duration of the program.
Can I arrive early or stay longer?
Absolutely.
You're welcome to extend your travels before meeting us in Taiwan or after the program concludes in South Korea. You'll simply arrange any additional accommodations and travel independently.
Are payment plans available?
Yes! You can choose the payment option that works best for you when you enroll:
Pay in full | 2 payments | 3 payments
There is no separate deposit. Your first payment confirms your place in the program, with any remaining payments automatically scheduled according to the payment plan you select.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Because JETBeyond: Across East Asia is a small-group international journey and reservations are made based on the confirmed cohort, $500 of your program payment is nonrefundable once you enroll.
If you need to cancel on or before December 6, 2026, any program payments made beyond the $500 nonrefundable amount will be refunded.
Beginning December 7, 2026, all program payments are nonrefundable as PGL will be making final reservations and financial commitments based on the confirmed cohort.
We strongly encourage travel insurance that includes trip cancellation and interruption coverage. Travel insurance with appropriate emergency medical coverage is required for participation.
What happens if plans or specific activities change?
International travel occasionally requires flexibility.
Specific accommodations, activities, transportation schedules, and local experiences may shift based on availability, weather, partner schedules, or circumstances beyond our control. Any changes will be made with the overall purpose and quality of the journey in mind.
